Albrecht Dürer (Versión Inglés)

Albrecht Dürer

Albrecht Dürer (Nuremberg, 1471 – 1528) was the most important artist of the German Renaissance and one of the most influential masters in the history of Western art.

The son of a Hungarian goldsmith, Dürer first trained in his father's workshop and later as a painter's apprentice. However, his early fame was due to his exceptional skills as an engraver and draftsman. He revolutionized the art of woodcut and copper engraving, elevating it to the status of a major art form.

He traveled twice to Italy (the first time around 1494 and the second in 1505-1507), where he came into contact with the great masters of the Italian Renaissance, such as Bellini and Leonardo. These trips were fundamental for Dürer to integrate perspective, anatomy, and classical beauty ideals into Northern European art.

He was a multifaceted artist, not only a painter and engraver but also a theorist interested in geometry, human proportion, and fortification. His work, characterized by profound detail, technical precision, and intense humanism, laid the foundation for modern art in Germany.

Meaning and Importance

  1. Iconography of Christ: Dürer portrays himself in a rigid, symmetrical frontal pose, with long brown hair falling over his shoulders, which evokes the traditional representation of Jesus Christ (the Salvator Mundi or the Face of Christ). By doing this, Dürer does not intend to be blasphemous, but rather to elevate the figure of the artist to the level of a creator, mimicking the creative power of God.

  2. Symbolism of Age: The portrait was made at the beginning of the year 1500, marking the turn of the century and the artist's age (28 years), a crucial moment of maturity in his life and career.

  3. The Signature and Inscription: The painting includes Dürer's famous monogram (an 'A' inside a 'D') on the left and a Latin inscription on the right, which reads:

“I thus painted myself, Albrecht Dürer of Nuremberg, with enduring colors, at the age of 28 years.” (Albertus Durerus Noricus ipsum me coloribus sic effingebam anno aetatis XXVIII.)

  4. Attire: He wears an elegant suit with a fur collar, a symbol of his increasing social status and wealth, reflecting the success he had achieved at his age.
